The Designers Collection brings together pieces attributed to named makers, from the great houses of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco years to silversmiths whose work deserves to be better known.

Taxco, Mexico · 1930s–1970s

Mexican Silver

In 1931 the American designer William Spratling opened a small workshop in Taxco, an old silver-mining town south of Mexico City, and asked local craftsmen to draw on their own country's heritage rather than on European models. Within a generation, Taxco had become one of the great centres of modernist jewellery.

Heavy silver, sculptural volumes, stones set as part of the structure rather than as ornament: a significant part of our Designers Collection comes from this moment.
